Semester 1 Final Project: Preface

Today is the last day of 2024. I came to the realisation that I have not documented any advancements regarding the final project. In all honesty, the act of documenting one’s own creative process should be a source of pleasure. However, my current progress is not particularly satisfactory. Consequently, I will commence the process of documenting the development of my endeavour today.

The work that I submitted to Manos was based on the concept of “Rock.” The rendering technique is cartoon rendering, which can be considered a form of NPR rendering (using a toon shader). The majority of the production will be conducted in Blender, with the final composition being performed in Adobe After Effects.

There are three reasons why I did not choose Nuke: First, even after 12 weeks of learning, I am still not very familiar with Nuke’s workflow. Second, in terms of cartoon rendering style, I think using AE will be more intuitive. Because some of the picture accuracy does not need to be that high. The most important thing is that I am more proficient in using AE.

Here are some references I found that are related to this theme. Despite the render style of these works being quite different, they all applied toon-shader for either the character or the background. I aim to imitate similar visual effects as they do.

And by now, here is what I have:

I will upload more details within the next 2 weeks about this project. Thanks for reading!
